	Art Gilkey was a team member of the Third American Karakoram Expedition attempting to summit K2 in 1953, but he became seriously ill after being trapped by a storm at 7,750 m; there was a desperate attempt by his fellow climbers to bring him down the mountain in a makeshift stretcher made from canvas, ropes and a sleeping bag, but he slid downhill and disappeared, probably swept away by an avalanche
